Day 38: July 14, 2019

When I was a little kid, I remember watching shows or movies as TV entertainment... you know, power rangers, full house, sesame street, Disney movies....shows that actually HAD A PLOT. And commercials. I'm not sure if it's just my kids, but they watch these god awful you tube "series" that are basically just families recording their daily lives. No plots, no point really that I can see other than just monetizing their lives.... and the strangest part is.... PEOPLE ACTUALLY WATCH THEM? It is so bizarre. And also: slightly horrifying. Like a train wreck that you can quite peel your eyes away from because it's so terrible.

Well, I decided today that we are 100% doing something wrong, because our lives are WAY more crazy than any of these you tube families, who make thousands of dollars because people actually give two shits if they eat scrambled eggs or waffles for breakfast.  I mean, shoot maybe we should set up a camera and call it good with the amount of crap we have going on over here. Not like I am inferring we should be making money off of this life, AT ALL, but I'm just saying at this point, it's comical to us, might be entertaining to the masses.

Enter day 38: THE DAY OF THE BROKEN CLAVICLE.

Because why not? Might be fun to have another injured comrade in the mix and another surgeon in the mix. We don't have much else going on anyway. Whatevs.

Today was supposed to be another low key day. A sunday. Kids were going to go play at the neighbor's with her grands, Justin was going to work on house projects, I was going to tinker around, as were Colleen and Oliver.

It started off as planned, if anything every really goes as planned. Justin went out to chop some wood, we made coffee and breakfast, and I went out to the gym for a ride.

A crazy long climbing ride with a big hill where I sought some serious #oliverstrong motivation.

The kids started playing with one of our neighbors' grandkids but the other had started puking at 4am so he was out of commission. First thing that did not quite go as planned. I came in from the gym and had just gotten out of the shower when I heard the scream. I can't quite describe it but it was a scream unlike just a scrapped knee or minor wreck. It was a gut wrenching scream, the kind that you do NOT want to hear from your kid.... like, ever. Bike wreck: Bennett Bo. The kids both wreck on their bikes pretty frequently, so initially it wasn't a HUGE cause for concern. We both held him and he kept saying his neck hurt.

Gave him some ice and then when he was still crying and whimpering, gave him some advil thinking he had kinked his neck.

We found out MUCH later in the day (after he had hidden the truth because he knew he would be in trouble), that he had taken a "jump" off the wall. We had told him not to ride his new bike up there because he was still getting used to it. Of course, in the 1.5 seconds we weren't looking, guess what the little dare devil did? Which resulted in losing control, and plunge off the wall. And CRAAAACK. But, what he told us was that he was just trying to do the normal jump (not up top) and he crashed. Which didn't quite make sense based on where the bike landed. Once the truth came out later, made much more sense. OF COURSE HE DID THAT. This kid has no fear. Ever.

Took a good enough chunk out of his helmet that we will probably have to replace it. Thank GOD he was wearing a helmet (always required, but still). We can replace a helmet, but could have been so much worse if he hadn't had one on. He likely broke his clavicle (collarbone) upon impact.

Owen was happy to have a few minutes of downtime. He didn't see the divebomb off the wall, either that or he was protecting his brother....

Meanwhile, in the other room, Oliver actually was feeling pretty good yesterday. About 5 out of 10, which is decent. All cuddled up for the day.

Owen and Colleen set out to play an epic game of skip bo and Uno, and I joined in for a few hands of Uno, too.

When Bennett was crying still even though the advil had time to set in, we knew it was probably not just a kink in the neck. He is our tough guy, and rarely cries even if he has a bad wreck. So, we knew it was time to take him in. Back to the ER we go.... frequent fliers there! We joked with Oliver he should go just for kicks.

Bennett was apparently a total trooper. None of the doctors or nurses could believe he had just had advil and didn't at all through the x-ray or exam or anything. Just kind of grimaced. He's a tough cookie.

You can see the crack about half way. OUCH. They basically just put him in a sling and refer us to a pediatric ortho surgeon. Typically this type of thing in kids will heal itself without surgery needed, so fingers crossed.

While Bennett and Justin were at the hospital, I took Owen golfing. It ended up being totally open on the course, so since we had time and it was a beautiful day, we decided to play. And I was smoked by a 6 year old. Ha.

I forgot a hair tie...FYI: #oliverstrong for the win!

You can't see it, but my ball is at the very left of this picture, Owen is one-putting in. He hit the green from about 130 yard out- and I thought I had had a good shot!

We stopped to get some treats for Bennett on our way home, and came home to find him cuddled on the couch. He was SO excited to show us his goods- his beanie baby, sling, and hospital gown.

Meanwhile, we were all stunned to see Oliver...he had real clothes on and looked all fancied up! He had a date with Lexi later in the evening. Was good to see him looking back to normal in terms of clothes on. The bald head looked even like he planned it that way- not like the result of cancer.

All in all... again... things don't go as planned. You just never know. It's like we keep thinking, ok, things are going to go x,y,z… this way... only to be reminded, maybe not so gently, sorry dudes, doesn't work like that! Here's another bit of a wrench in your plans. Also: stop trying to have plans. A reminder to roll with it. And perhaps embrace the fact that for some reasons we can't have a week go by without a trip to the ER.

The good news of today on the Oliver front is that it WAS a low key for him. Feeling pretty good, and happy about his date with Lexi. So, happy for that, and much needed before another day of chemo starts tomorrow. #oliverstrong.
