Des Moines...the city of dreams

So Des Moines could be the most god awful city (if it can be called that) that I have ever lived in. I mean it isn't THAT bad but only if you have the mind set that you are NOT living in what you would normally think to be a city. Many times I would just be flat out bored because I knew that there is nothing to do in this town... The highlight of my year here: A NEW MALL! A REAL MALL! WITH NORMAL STORES! Now, if I would actually count the times I have been to that mall for lack of anything better to do (ESPECIALLY when it's so cold out that to even step outside petrifies you) I would say it would probably even out to be about one time a day for each day of the year. Some days I would go to the mall twice...seriously. Some days I would go to Target just to walk around...literally. It was that bad. Now you may think that sounds pretty pitiful but I would like to know what you would do! Just imagine living in a box, an ICE BOX. TV gets pretty boring after a while and cleaning out every single nook of your house gets stupid-who really wants to do that? Cleaning your car is pointless because it will just rain or snow the next day... so, what do you do? GO TO THE MALL! THE ONLY MALL! THE ONLY NORMAL MALL.

That being said, since we have decided to move to Phoenix, I am actually getting kind of sad about leaving Des Moines. Regardless of how many times I have complained about it and wanted to leave, it actually will be harder than I thought. It is so unique to this country... you can't go to every state and see a farm no matter where you go... Plus, I really love my job and have grown attached to the people I work with. And since it is nice out right now (one of the two months out of the year where it is neither humid nor freezing) I have been having a lot of fun biking, hiking, playing tennis, and hitting golf balls. I haven't been to the mall in about a month! I am sad to leave... although it has never really felt like "home" it is a place I will always remember and cherish for everything that it does have to offer...even if that is just one cool mall and a great first job.

hi jenn! cool blog! i remember the time travis & i went to des moines as a vacation from Lamoni... We asked the people working at panera where the movie theater was and none of them knew where one was!!! how can you not know where the movie theater is? it was like the twilight zone.

i remember you telling us about that before! that is unbelievable! one of the perks of the new mall is that a century theater came in too... quite different than all the other little dinky theaters they have here... i'd hope that if you asked someone now they'd know where it is!

As I recall, Des Moines has an excellent art museum. The collection is not very large, but it is impressive. And lunch in the courtyard there is delightful.

Also, isn't there a sort of river walk there near the capitol? And a garden?

yes... we just went to the des moines art museum several months ago... the collection was quite impressive. Let me clarify: I do not think Des Moines is the worst place in the world. It just is a whole lot different than any other city I've ever been to or lived in-whether that is good or bad depends on who you ask. It isn't quite my style, but I know lots of people who love it here.

. . . and don't they have that famous Peanut Butter Festival in Des Moines, sometime in the Fall?

Now THAT would make Des Moines a city worth staying in FOREVER.
